The St. Croix County, Wisconsin, law enforcement community is mourning the loss of retired Sheriff John Shilts Sr., whose lifetime of service and unwavering commitment to public safety left a lasting legacy throughout the region. According to the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Shilts suffered a medical emergency in Deer Park, Wisconsin, on July 14, 2026. He was airlifted to the University of Minnesota for emergency medical treatment but passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital.
John Shilts devoted his life to serving others through a remarkable career in law enforcement that spanned nearly four decades. He began his career with the Somerset and New Richmond Police Departments before joining the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office in 1987. Throughout the following 30 years, he served in numerous capacities, including assignments with the drug task force, the Emergency Response Unit, and leadership roles as sergeant, captain, and chief deputy.
In 2011, Shilts was elected Sheriff of St. Croix County and later earned a second term, leading the department with integrity, professionalism, and a steadfast commitment to protecting the community. He retired on July 14, 2017, after completing a combined 38 years of distinguished public service.
Colleagues remember Sheriff Shilts as an exceptional leader, trusted mentor, and respected friend whose guidance helped shape generations of deputies and staff. His larger-than-life personality, dedication to excellence, and genuine compassion earned him admiration both inside and outside law enforcement.
