Zambia is mourning the passing of Dr. Guy Lindsay Scott, the nation’s former Vice President and Acting President, who died at the age of 82. Born in Livingstone, Zambia, Dr. Scott pursued higher education at the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford before returning home to contribute to national development. His commitment to public service led him to serve as Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries from 1991 to 1996. During one of southern Africa’s most severe droughts in 1992–1993, he oversaw emergency maize imports that helped prevent widespread famine, earning recognition for his decisive leadership during a national crisis.
Throughout his distinguished political career, Dr. Scott represented both Mpika Central and Lusaka Central in Parliament. He also co-founded the Patriotic Front alongside the late President Michael Sata and served as the party’s Secretary-General. Following President Sata’s death in 2014, Dr. Scott became Zambia’s Acting President, serving from 2014 to 2015. His appointment was historic, making him the first white democratic head of state on mainland Africa since 1994.
