Authorities have identified the motorcyclist who died following a traffic collision on Kapiolani Boulevard in the Moiliili neighborhood as 51-year-old Kenneth Calimpong.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday near the intersection of Kapiolani Boulevard and Mahiai Street. Investigators said a 67-year-old man was driving westbound on Kapiolani Boulevard when he attempted to make a U-turn. At the same time, Calimpong was traveling westbound on his motorcycle and collided with the turning vehicle.
The impact threw Calimpong from his motorcycle onto the roadway. Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported him to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he later succumbed to his injuries. Police confirmed that Calimpong was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The driver of the other vehicle was not injured and remained at the scene, cooperating fully with investigators. Preliminary findings indicate that excessive speed does not appear to have contributed to the collision. Authorities are continuing to investigate whether alcohol or drugs played any role.
State Representative Ikaika Olds, who was campaigning nearby when the collision occurred, described hearing the crash and immediately rushing to assist. He said he instructed bystanders to call 911 before checking on the injured rider, recalling the devastating scene and the urgency of the response.
Olds also expressed concern about the stretch of Kapiolani Boulevard where the crash occurred, describing it as a heavily traveled corridor known for speeding and illegal U-turns. He noted that drivers sometimes attempt unsafe turns because of nearby roadway restrictions and freeway access points.
In response to the tragedy, Olds said he will continue advocating for improved traffic control measures, additional safety devices, and roadway improvements aimed at reducing dangerous driving behavior and preventing future crashes.
