The fatal shooting of Shannon Watkins in Jonesboro, Georgia, remains a tragic case that drew widespread attention across Clayton County. Authorities say the incident began as an alleged firearm theft before escalating into a deadly confrontation outside a local gas station.
According to the Clayton County Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting on March 30, 2023, at a Shell gas station located in the 500 block of Flint River Road. Emergency medical personnel also arrived at the scene, where they found 37-year-old Shannon Watkins suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators determined that Watkins had entered the convenience store to purchase a drink when a suspect allegedly removed a handgun from his holster and fled the store. Police said Watkins pursued the individual outside in an attempt to recover his firearm. During the confrontation, gunfire erupted. Investigators believe a second suspect exited a nearby white Chrysler 300 and also fired at Watkins before both suspects fled the area.
