The law enforcement community across the United States is mourning the tragic loss of Deputy U.S. Marshal Michael Andrew Hanson, who was killed in the line of duty while serving an arrest warrant on a fugitive in Alexandria, Louisiana. Hanson, 36, died on Monday after being shot during a law enforcement operation conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service Western District of Louisiana Fugitive Task Force and the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.
According to officials, officers were attempting to arrest Clarence Frazier, 48, who was wanted for failing to appear in state court on a charge of sexual battery involving a person with infirmities. After locating Frazier at his residence on Rutland Road, investigators obtained a search warrant before moving in to execute the operation.
Authorities said officers, clearly identified as law enforcement, announced their presence before making a forced entry into the home. Once inside, they encountered Frazier barricaded in a bedroom. During the confrontation, Frazier allegedly opened fire, striking Deputy Hanson. Despite emergency efforts, Hanson succumbed to his injuries at approximately 4:45 p.m. CDT.
Following the shooting, the suspect remained barricaded inside the residence during an extended standoff before ultimately being taken into custody. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, is leading the investigation into the fatal shooting.
U.S. Marshals Service Director Gadyaces Serralta described Hanson’s death as a tremendous loss, honoring him as a dedicated public servant whose commitment to protecting communities never wavered. Hanson joined the U.S. Marshals Service in 2020 after previously serving with Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Ocean Springs Police Department, the Mississippi Department of Transportation, and the Gulfport Police Department.
Deputy Hanson is survived by his wife and two children. His death is being mourned by colleagues, friends, and communities across the nation, who remember him for his courage, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to public safety. His sacrifice in the line of duty will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude, and his legacy of honorable service will continue to inspire those who wear the badge.
